Concrete Institute of Australia
In 2007, Malcolm was asked to chair the organising committee for the 24th Biennial National Concrete Conference of the Concrete Institute of Australia. Ultimately, a successful conference was delivered in September 2009 despite the difficulties of the global financial crisis
During this period, Malcolm was also asked to step in as Acting CEO of the Concrete Institute. This appointment lasted for five months.
The Concrete Institute of Australia is an independent and dynamic organisation dedicated to enhancing and extending the knowledge and use of concrete in Australia. Its members span the entire building and construction industry, and include an eclectic mix of professors, builders, architects, engineers, material suppliers, government authorities, and civil contractors.
The Concrete Institute was established in 1970 and operates through six State Branches and a number of Regional Groups, guided by a Federal Council.
The challenge for the conference was to develop and present a model and format which met the needs of the industry in the difficult financial situation and which attracted sponsorship and attendance. Concrete Solutions 09 evolved as a more practical solutions-based conference which included for the first time a Technical Forum day to address critical contemporary issues as well as a detailed program of technical papers over two days. Ultimately, over 350 people attended coming from all states and overseas.
